The Red Centre
Judy is deeply upset. She wanted to show me the Red Centre of Australia ... but it's green.
She keeps telling me that her abiding memory of the school trips to Ayers Rock made in the 1980s was the red sand. Well the red sand is still there, it's just a bit harder to see because of all the vegetation.
I think it looks just fine.
After watching the sunset on Uluru three nights in succession, doing the 10km walk round the base of the Rock (which involved getting up at 5:30am ... not a pleasant experience), watching the camel racing, and doing the 7.4km Valley of the Winds circuit plus the 2.6km Wolpa Gorge walk at Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), we took a helicopter ride over Uluru and Kata Tjuta on the day we left. The red sand was clearly visible from the air.
